£15.00

Crinodendron hookerianum, commonly known as the Chilean lantern tree, is an ornamental evergreen shrub or small tree prized for its bright crimson, lantern-shaped flowers. It is native to the Valdivian rainforests of southern Chile and was introduced to Britain in 1848. The plant has received the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Award of Garden Merit.

  • Flowers: From late spring to summer (May to August in the UK), it produces waxy, lantern-like flowers that hang from the undersides of its branches.
  • Foliage: The leaves are narrow, evergreen, and dark green, providing year-round interest.
  • Size: It is slow-growing, eventually reaching a height of 4–8 meters and a spread of 2.5–4 meters after 10–20 years.
  • Habit: It has an upright, stiffly branched habit.

Growing conditions

  • Position: Plant in a sheltered spot that offers partial shade, such as a woodland garden or against a south- or west-facing wall. It can tolerate full sun, but its roots should be kept cool and shaded. Shelter from cold, drying winds is crucial.
  • Soil: This plant requires a fertile, moist but well-drained, humus-rich, and acidic soil. If your garden soil is not acidic, you can grow it in a large container with ericaceous compost or add ericaceous soil to the ground where you are planting.
