Brassaiopsis mitis (Philippine umbrella plant) is a rare, semi-evergreen, subtropical shrub or small tree in the Araliaceae family, prized for its large, snowflake-shaped dark green leaves and thick, thorny branches. It acts as a dramatic "jungle-style" focal point in sheltered gardens or pots.

Key Characteristics & Care

  • Appearance: Large, deeply divided, palmately arranged leaves on spiny, woody stems, reaching 2.5–6 meters (8–20 feet) tall in ideal conditions.
  • Hardiness: Generally hardy to roughly -5°C, but established plants can withstand colder conditions (~-10°C) with good protection, such as against a warm, south-facing wall.
  • Position: Requires a sheltered position protected from harsh, cold winter winds, doing best in part shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in nutrient-rich, moist but well-drained, humusy soil, ideally with a neutral, acidic, or alkaline pH.
  • Cultivation: Often grown in pots in cooler climates and moved into a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory during winter.

Brassaiopsis mitis is frequently used for creating tropical-looking, architectural displays and is often considered a collectors' plant.
