Cordyline australis 'Black Knight' is a striking evergreen shrub known for its deep, almost black, sword-like leaves. It provides dramatic, tropical-style foliage that adds architectural flair to gardens and containers.

  • Foliage: The "Black Knight" variety is prized for its dark burgundy to near-black foliage. In bright, sunny conditions, this colour intensifies. The leaves are long, leathery, and strap-shaped, and they form a dramatic rosette.
  • Form: As a young plant, it has a fountain-like shape of strappy leaves. As it matures, it develops a strong, upright trunk, becoming a single-stemmed, palm-like tree.
  • Flowers and fruit: Established plants may produce spikes of small, fragrant, creamy-white flowers during the summer. These are followed by small, spherical berries.

Growing conditions

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Plants with coloured foliage, like 'Black Knight', can lose their intense colour if grown in too much shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil, and tolerates sandy or loamy conditions. It is vital to avoid waterlogged areas, as this can cause root rot.
