The Chinese mahonia (Mahonia sinensis) is an evergreen shrub native to China, known for its elegant foliage, fragrant yellow flowers, and ornamental blue-black berries. It is well-suited for shaded garden areas and tolerates a range of soil types.
Appearance
- Leaves: The foliage is glossy green and pinnate, with leaflets that have one to three small teeth at the tips. The leaves are clustered at the ends of the branches.
- Flowers: Pale yellow, fragrant flowers appear in short, dense clusters between spring and early autumn.
- Berries: The flowers are followed by blue-black fruits that add seasonal interest.
Growing conditions
- Light: Prefers partial to full shade, but can tolerate some sun if the soil is kept moist. A sheltered location away from strong, cold winds is best.
- Soil: It is adaptable to most soils, including chalk, as long as the soil is moist and well-drained.
- Size: Can reach an ultimate height of 1.5–2.5 metres and a spread of 1–1.5 metres after 5–10 years.
