Musa basjoo, commonly known as the Japanese or hardy banana, is a large, herbaceous perennial native to southern China. It is widely grown for its huge, tropical-looking leaves and is notable for being one of the most cold-hardy banana species.
- Size and structure: Musa basjoo forms clumps of multiple trunks, or "pseudostems," and can reach a height of up to 5 metres in ideal conditions. The large, paddle-shaped leaves can grow up to 1.5 metres long, creating a massive, jungle-like effect.
- Hardiness: The plant is root-hardy and can withstand colder temperatures than other banana species. In frost-prone regions, the above-ground stems and leaves may die back in winter, but the rhizome (underground root system) will typically survive and send up new shoots in the spring.
- Flowers and fruit: Mature plants can produce large, pendulous flower stalks with yellowish flowers during the summer. These are sometimes followed by small, greenish bananas. However, the fruit is not considered edible and is unlikely to fully ripen in cooler climates.
- Growth habit: This is a suckering perennial, meaning it will spread by sending up new shoots from the base, which can lead to a large clump over time.
