It is a rhizomatous plant that is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, particularly Central America and the Andes. Description

- Flowers: Dazzling heads of large, tubular flowers appear during mid-to-late summer. The colour is typically orange, but can also be reddish-pink.
- Seeds: The flowers are followed by large, dark-coloured, spherical seed pods.
