£12.00
Kniphofia northiae, also known as the giant red-hot poker, is a dramatic evergreen perennial native to South Africa. Valued for its bold, architectural appearance, this plant is an excellent choice for adding striking texture and height to gardens.
- Leaves: It forms a large rosette of broad, arching, strap-shaped leaves that can resemble an aloe. The leaves are often a striking blue-green or glaucous shade and can grow up to 1.5 meters (5 ft) long.
- Flowers: In late spring and early summer, thick stems rise above the foliage, topped with dense, oval-shaped spikes of tubular flowers. The buds start out as a muted reddish-orange and open to a creamy-yellow color, with the fading flowers at the base turning to greenish-cream.
- Height: The plant can reach up to 1.7 meters (5.6 ft) tall, with a spread of around 90 cm (3 ft).
Growing conditions
- Sun: Prefers a position in full sun.
- Soil: Thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Good drainage is crucial to prevent the crown from rotting, especially during winter. It can adapt to a variety of soil types, including sandy or clay, as long as it's not waterlogged.
- Watering: Requires moderate watering, particularly during dry periods.
- Hardiness: Hardy to approximately -10 °C (14 °F). In colder climates, a winter mulch can provide additional root insulation.
- Pruning: Cut back old, spent flower spikes to the base of the plant. The evergreen foliage should be left through winter and can be tidied up in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
