Kniphofia rooperi, also known as Rooper's red-hot poker, is a robust, clump-forming perennial prized for its large, spherical, orange and yellow flower spikes that appear from late summer into autumn. An Award of Garden Merit (AGM) recipient from the Royal Horticultural Society, this species is noted for its distinctive flowers and evergreen foliage.
Key characteristics
- Flowers: Dense, broadly rounded spikes of tubular flowers bloom from August, September, or October, often extending into November. The blooms are a striking bright orange-red at the top and fade to yellow towards the bottom.
- Foliage: The plant features lush, deep green, strap-like leaves that are evergreen, providing year-round structure.
- Height: Flower stems typically grow to a height of 1 to 1.5 meters (3 to 5 feet), rising above the arching foliage.
- Origin: Native to South Africa.
Growing conditions
- Sunlight: Kniphofia rooperi thrives in a position with full sun.
- Soil: It prefers moist, well-drained soil. It can tolerate loamy and sandy soil types and is adaptable to most soil conditions, though it does not do well in heavy, wet clay.
- Water: Needs moderate, regular watering, especially in warmer weather, but be careful not to let the roots sit in water.
- Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK and most temperate climates, with good winter resilience.
