Nandina domestica 'Flirt' is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its year-round color and low, mounding growth habit. A newer variety of heavenly bamboo, it offers superior red foliage in summer compared to older relatives like 'Fire Power'.
Appearance
- Foliage: The new leaves of the Nandina domestica 'Flirt' emerge in a deep wine-red colour in spring, intensifying to a brighter red in summer. The mature foliage is purple-green or deep green and provides excellent contrast.
- Flowers and berries: In late spring to early summer, small clusters of white, star-shaped flowers with yellow anthers appear. These are followed by red berries, though the plant rarely flowers or fruits.
Size and growth
- Dimensions: This is a dwarf variety, reaching a modest height of 1 to 2 feet and a similar spread of 1 to 2.5 feet.
- Growth habit: 'Flirt' has a low, spreading, and bushy growth habit.
