Blechnum chilense, commonly known as the Chilean hard fern or costilla de vaca(Spanish for "cow's rib"), is a large, dramatic evergreen fern native to the temperate forests of Chile, Argentina, and the Juan Fernández Islands. It is highly valued in gardening for its bold, leathery, dark green fronds

  • Foliage: Produces robust, leathery, arching, dark green fronds that have a distinctive undulating or crinkled appearance, leading to the nickname "Seersucker Fern". New growth often emerges with a decorative bronze or pinkish hue before maturing to a deep green.
  • Size: In ideal conditions, it can reach an ultimate height of 1-1.5 meters (3-5 feet) with a spread of 1.5-2.5 meters, slowly forming impressive colonies via underground runners. Mature plants may develop a short, trunk-like base over time.
  • Hardiness: It is a hardy perennial, typically suited for USDA zones 7-9. While it is frost-resistant and can survive cold winters, a very hard frost may damage the fronds, so a sheltered location is recommended in colder climates.
  • Award: This species has received the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
