£12.00

Stachyurus praecox, commonly known as early stachyurus or spiketail, is a deciduous shrub prized for its elegant, pendent, pale yellow flowers that appear in late winter and early spring on bare branches. Native to Japan and Korea, it is an excellent choice for a woodland garden or shrub border and has earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit

  • Flowers: Stiffly pendent, catkin-like racemes (spikes) of small, bell-shaped, pale yellow to greenish-yellow flowers appear from February to April, before the leaves emerge. They provide a vital early source of nectar for pollinators like bees.
  • Foliage: The leaves are ovate (egg-shaped) with a slender point and are mid-green in spring and summer. In autumn, they offer an attractive display as they turn shades of yellow, orange, or purple before falling.
  • Stems/Habit: The shrub has an open, spreading habit with arching, red-purple to bronze-coloured shoots, which provide architectural interest in winter.
  • Size: It typically grows to a height of 2-4 meters (6-13 feet) and a spread of 2.5-3 meters (8-10 feet).
