Blechnum spicant, commonly known as hard fern or deer fern, is a hardy, evergreen fern native to the Northern Hemisphere, including the UK and North America. It is valued in gardening for its year-round interest and suitability for shady, damp areas.

The fern is evergreen and features two distinct types of fronds (dimorphic):  These form a dense, low-growing, spreading rosette of narrow, dark green, comb-like, leathery leaves for photosynthesis. Taller and more erect, these emerge from the center, producing spores on their undersides. They turn brown and form an attractive, delicate skeleton in winter after releasing their spores. The plant typically grows to a height and spread of around 50 cm (about 1.5 ft). It is found naturally in temperate forests, woodlands, and moors, preferring cool, moist, and often acidic soil conditions.
