Blechnum tabulare, commonly known as the Table Mountain fern, is an impressive, architectural, evergreen fern species native to Southern Africa and other wet tropical biomes. It is admired for its striking appearance and large, dark green fronds that form a distinctive, flat-topped, symmetrical crown, resembling a tabletop.
Although not a true tree fern, mature plants will eventually develop a stout, hairy trunk, adding a structural and exotic feel to gardens or large containers.
- Height and Spread: It typically grows to a height of 1 to 2 metres and a spread of around 1.2 metres in garden conditions.
- Foliage: The fronds are large, pinnate (deeply divided), leathery, and remain green all year in suitable climates.
- Origin: Native to the mountainous landscapes of South Africa (specifically Table Mountain, where it was first collected), Madagascar, Australia, the Falkland Islands, and parts of the West Indies.
- Hardiness: It is borderline hardy, capable of withstanding temperatures down to approximately -5°C (23°F) for short periods, but may need winter protection in colder regions or should be brought indoors during winter.
