olystichum polyblepharum, commonly known as the Japanese Tassel Fern or Japanese Lace Fern, is a popular, award-winning evergreen fern prized for its glossy, dark green, arching fronds and low-maintenance nature. It is a native of eastern Asia.

Key Characteristics

  • Foliage: The fern produces stiff, erect, lance-shaped fronds that form a distinctive shuttlecock-like rosette. New growth in spring emerges a striking yellow-green or golden-bronze color and is covered in soft, hair-like scales, which gives it its "tassel" appearance before the fronds mature and flatten out.
  • Size: It typically grows to an eventual height and spread of around 60-90 cm (approx. 2-3 feet).
  • Hardiness: It is a fully hardy plant and provides year-round interest.
  • Awards: It has received the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Award of Garden Merit (AGM) for its reliable performance and good resistance to pests and diseases.
