Dryopteris atrata, commonly known as the shaggy wood fern or black wood fern, is a hardy, semi-evergreen perennial valued for its architectural form and striking contrast between vibrant green fronds and dark, scaly stems. This clumping fern is a popular choice for brightening shady garden areas.
Key Characteristics
- Foliage The fronds are lance-shaped, arching, and bright to deep green. A key feature is the presence of distinctive dark brown to black hairs/scales on the stems (stipes) and midribs, which give the fern its "shaggy" appearance.
- Size It typically grows to a height and spread of 60 to 100 cm (2 to 3 feet).
- Hardiness It is a fully hardy plant (RHS H4 rating, down to -10°C).
- Origin Native to evergreen forests across a wide range of Asia, including the Himalayas, Tibet, and China.
