Dryopteris erythrosora, commonly known as the autumn fern or Japanese shield fern, is a hardy, semi-evergreen perennial native to East Asia (China and Japan). It is widely cultivated for its unique, ornamental foliage that emerges in a striking coppery-pink or bronze colour in spring before maturing to a glossy, rich green. 

Key Characteristics

  • Foliage: Semi-evergreen, with new fronds emerging a vibrant coppery-red or orange before transitioning to dark green.
  • Size: Typically reaches an ultimate height and spread of 0.5–1 meter (approx. 2-3 feet).
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in most UK climates (RHS H5-H7, tolerant of temperatures down to at least -10°C or -15°C), though the foliage may die back in the severest winters.
