Epimedium × perralchicum 'Frohnleiten' (commonly known as barrenwort or bishop's mitre) is a highly robust, clump-forming, semi-evergreen to evergreen perennial renowned as one of the toughest and most reliable ground covers for shady garden areas. It is a celebrated German cultivar that has earned the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Award of Garden Merit.
- Flowers: Produces airy sprays of delicate, bright yellow, star-shaped flowers that resemble tiny daffodils or orchids. The blooms sit on thin, wiry stems held well above the foliage from mid to late spring (April to May).
- Foliage: Features leathery, heart-shaped leaflets. The leaves emerge in spring with a dramatic bronze-red flush and prominent green veins, turn a rich glossy green for summer, and develop beautiful copper, russet, and gold tints in autumn and winter.
- Size & Growth: Grows slowly to a height of 30–45 cm with a spread of 45–75 cm. It spreads via underground rhizomes to form a dense, weed-suppressing carpet.
- Light: Thrives best in partial shade to full shade. It is ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders, and planting underneath established deciduous trees.
- Soil: Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moist, but well-drained soil. However, it is highly adaptable and—unlike many other shade plants—highly tolerant of dry shade once its root system is fully established.
- Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK and northern Europe (RHS Hardiness rating H6, down to -20°C). It appreciates a spot sheltered from cold, drying winds.
- Maintenance: To keep it looking its best, shear all old foliage to the ground in late winter (January/February). This removes winter-damaged leaves, allows the new spring flowers to be seen without obstruction, and encourages a vibrant flush of fresh, colorful spring foliage.
