Epimedium grandiflorum 'Lilafee' (commonly known as Barrenwort, Bishop's Hat, or Fairy Wings) is a compact, clump-forming herbaceous perennial celebrated for its striking lavender-violet flowers and dynamic seasonal foliage. Bred by the famed German plantsman Ernst Pagels, it holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding garden performance.
- Flowers: Features delicate, spidery, amethyst-purple flowers with long, elegant white-tipped spurs that hover above the foliage from April to May.
- Foliage: Heart-shaped leaves emerge in spring with a dramatic bronze-purple or maroon tint. They mature to bright apple green in summer, then shift to rich red and rusty tones in autumn before dropping for winter.
- Size: A tidy, smaller variety reaching an established height of 20–30 cm and a spread of 30–45 cm.
- Growth Habit: Spreads slowly via creeping underground rhizomes to form a dense, weed-suppressing ground cover.
- Sunlight: Thrives best in partial shade to deep shade. Dappled woodland shade is ideal.
- Soil: Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and handles dry shade beneath mature trees.
- Pruning: Cut the old, dead foliage flat to the ground in late winter or early spring. This prevents the old leaves from obscuring the delicate spring flowers.
- Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS Rating H5/H6), tolerating severe winter temperatures down to -15°C.
